Farmer’s Market opens June 7
Vendors will be accepting Food Stamps this year
Fresh, locally produced fruits and vegetables, live music and other treats will be available downtown on Saturdays beginning June 7, when the Springfield Farmers Market kicks off its 2008 season.
The market is open on North Market Street – the lane between Elderly United and the Heritage Center – from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Local musicians perform for the crowds between 9 and 11 a.m.
Gene Barnett, co-manager of the market, said the market grew well last year, with sales about doubling between 2006 and 2007.
In addition to locally grown produce, Barnett said the market also features baked goods, candy, dog treats, flowers, artwork and craft items.
New this year, Barnett said, vendors at the Farmers Market will be able to accept Food Stamps beginning some time this summer, which will be a good way to get healthy food to people who might not otherwise feel they can afford it.
Local individuals, organizations and businesses sponsor the market each week, and a few sponsorships are still open.
If you’re interested in sponsoring a week, you can call Gene at 536-9408.
If you’re interested in being a vendor at the Farmers Market, call Sherry Chen at 408-7171.
